How to use your readymade frame
Learn how to fit your art into your readymade frame
Step by step guide on fitting your image into your readymade frame
If you have any artwork or cherished memories that need special care, we recommend having them professionally framed by Fitzroy Frame Makers. This guide is intended for using your readymade frame for photos and prints that can be replaced. For artwork and items that you want to preserve for a lifetime, our conservation framing and materials are designed to ensure long-lasting protection. Here is more information on our conservation framing.
Find a clean, soft surface for assembling your frame—ideally free from dust and debris. A piece of clean cardboard or carpet works well. Make sure your hands are clean, or preferably use white gloves to avoid leaving fingerprints on the picture or glass.
To open the frame, gently lift the flexi points using a butter knife (or similar), and remove the foam backing board and mount board. Place your picture face-up and position the window mount above it to ensure a proper fit.
Using acid-free hinging tape, apply two vertical strips about 2cm long at the top of your image, either side, so half the tape adheres to the picture and the other half extends above it. Carefully place the mount on top of the picture, making sure the image is centered within the window mount and that it adheres to the back of the mount.
Flip the picture and mount onto their reverse side and place a horizontal strip of tape across the top on each hinge, to secure the vertical strips. (this will look like a T) Gently press to ensure it sticks well. Set the mounted image aside on top of your foamcore backing.
Clean your glass with glass cleaner away from the mounted picture to avoid contamination. Use a high-quality glass cleaner and a clean microfiber or soft cloth to clean the inside of the glass, then let it dry.
Carefully place your mounted image and foam core backing inside your frame. Carefully remove any dust or fluff that may have settled under the glass using gloved fingers or a clean, soft brush. Avoid anything that could scratch the image or glass.
Once everything looks good, press down the flexi points to secure everything in place.
Attach your wire with our framers knot as seen in the video so that it doesn’t unravel over time.
